In honor of our current production, Assassins, the show’s cast and artistic team along with the Lyric Stage staff compiled a Spotify playlist of songs that remind us of the show. Here are some of our favorites:

$20 – boygenius

Mama told me that it don’t run

on wishes, but that I should have fun

Pushing the flowers that come

up into the front of a shotgun

So many hills to die on

This song feels like it belongs in the American folk genre and is representative of how the American dream should probably not exist.” – Jacob Thomas Less | Senior House Manager and John Hinckley in Assassins

This Land is Your Land – Woody Guthrie

“As I went walking that ribbon of highway

And I saw above me that endless skyway

I saw below me that golden valley

This land was made for you and me

“This song ties in to the Balladeer so closely as he is there to show that America can be and believes [it to be] better than what is in its history and wants to push the hope and image of the nation.” – Dan Prior | The Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald in Assassins

Love If It We Made It – Rina Sawayama (originally sung by The 1975)

Start with misdemeanors and we’ll make a business out of them

And we can find out the information access all the applications

That are hardening positions based on miscommunication

“This social anthem on modern violence and division reminds me of the resentment, anger, and disenfranchisement Americans have been grappling with long before this contemporary moment. I love that there’s a hopeful spin though. We can still make it as a nation despite our current state of affairs.” –   Kandyce Whittingham| Marketing and Development Associate

A Distorted Reality is Now a Necessity to be Free – Elliott Smith

You disappoint me

You people raking in on the world

The devil’s script sells

You the heart of a blackbird.

“Elliott Smith discusses the difficulty of caring for a country that doesn’t care about its people living to their highest potential, and he mentions how ironic it is to live in a free country that feels so restrictive.” – Samantha Boutureira | Community Engagement/Marketing Intern

Sideshow – Blue Magic

Step right up, hurry, hurry,

Before the show begins, my friends

Stand in line, get your ticket

I hope you will attend

It’ll only cost 50 cents to see

What life has done to those like you and me

Darren Paul | Blaine/Ensemble in Assassins
