The Lyric Staff’s Favorite Fall Activities – Fall 2020

Autumn has finally arrived in Boston! With the weather changing comes fun activities everyone can enjoy. Here are some of our staff’s favorite things to do in fall!

1. Taking a walk

“I grew up in a small, rural town in Connecticut, so being able to take a walk is something I appreciate so much.” – Julia Thorn, Digital Media Assistant

There’s nothing better than enjoying the beauty of nature, especially in Boston! Taking a walk in the fall season relieves your mind, especially after a long day of school or work, or even before you get your day started. Going out to get some fresh air and admiring the color changes of the leaves is a great pastime for the fall season. Whether it’s strolling through the greenery of the Boston Common or exploring hidden gems of Boston, taking a walk never gets old!

2. Kayaking with friends

“Getting out on the water is relaxing and brings [my friends and I] great joy.” – Jo-An Heileman, Member of the Board of Directors

Just because the temperature’s dropping doesn’t mean we can’t continue summer pastimes! Kayaking is a great outdoor activity for groups of friends because you have the opportunity to spend time together! For kayak or boat rentals in the city, check out Paddle Boston, which specializes in canoe, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard rentals in the Greater Boston area. Whether you want to get some exercise in or you just want to spend some time with friends, kayaking is an amazing activity that can be transitioned into the fall season!

3. Grilling

“After dinner, the coals are usually warm enough for s’mores.” – Matt Chapuran, Executive Director

Here’s another summer activity that can be easily transitioned into fall! Grilling season doesn’t have to end on Labor Day—Grilling is a great activity to do in the fall, especially because the autumn breeze is so nice when cooking outside. Autumn grilling is such a pleasure, especially when the foods you prepare capture the essence of the fall season. There are so many delicious foods you can cook for fall dinners that the whole family can enjoy, and feeling the chilly weather when in front of a hot grill is a plus!

4. Reading

“Curling up with a good book and a cup of coffee is so relaxing, especially in the fall!” – Marieska Luzada, Digital Marketing/Social Media Assistant

As the days get shorter and the nights get longer, some people may dread the end of summer—except for book lovers! There’s something really comforting about being secured in a warm blanket, reading a book, with a cup of warm tea or coffee by your bed, and fall is a great season to get cracking on your TBR (to-be-read) pile! The weather is also warm enough so you can read outside underneath a tree or on a picnic blanket if you wanted to! Though reading is wonderful every single day of the year, it certainly brings a lot of serotonin when fall rolls around.

5. Ice skating

“There are a bunch of affordable rinks around the city, but my favorite is the Kelly Outdoor Rink in Jamaica Plain.” – Kate Casner, Digital Marketing Associate

Towards the later fall months as the temperatures drop, ice skating is so much fun, especially with friends! It’s a way of exercise, and keeps the whole party engaged and active. Some notable places around the city to go ice skating include the Frog Pond in the Boston Common, the outdoor rink at Kendall Plaza, and the Kelly Outdoor Rink in Jamaica Plain!

6. Apple picking

“I had never tried this until moving to New England and it is a great time.” – Aja M. Jackson, Interim Production Manager

Along with sweater and pumpkin spice, apple picking is one of the highlights of the fall season all across the country, and nothing beats apple picking in New England! Apple season in New England typically lasts from mid-August through October, and it’s a fun activity to do for the whole family, or even a group of friends! People of all ages can enjoy roaming through the rows of apple trees and picking out the perfect apples to bring home while feeling the nice fall breeze. And with apple season comes the arrival of apple cider, apple cider donuts, apple pies, and many more delicious apple recipes!
